چکیده

A traditional source of evidence in linguistics is intuition, the judgments of competent speakers of a language. Patterns in the intuitions motivate theoretical developments, and hypotheses are tested against those intuitions. In much of the literature on intuitions in linguistics, 'intuition' is used synonymously with 'grammaticality judgment,' which in turn is a (widely-recognized) misnomer for 'acceptability judgment.' Acceptability judgments are a paradigmatic type of intuition, consider the following examples from discussions of binding theory: (1) a. Jim1 reasoned that he1 got the promotion. b. *He1 reasoned that Jim1 got the promotion. In these sentences, the star (*) affixed to the front of (1b) indicates that the sentence is judged to be unacceptable (given that 'he' and 'Jim' co-refer, as indicated by the subscripts). On the basis of this judgment, the sentence is inferred to be ungrammatical (and indeed, the star is at times interpreted as if it represents this further claim). Whether

Nurses and Physicians in a Medical Admission Unit Can Accurately Predict Mortality of Acutely Admitted Patients: A Prospective Cohort Study

BACKGROUND There exist several risk stratification systems for predicting mortality of emergency patients. However, some are complex in clinical use and others have been developed using suboptimal methodology. The objective was to evaluate the capability of the staff at a medical admission unit (MAU) to use clinical intuition to predict in-hospital mortality of acutely admitted patients. METH...

Some Geometric Insight in Self - Calibration andCritical Motion

Self-calibration and critical motion sequences are problems which have received a lot of attention lately. The key concept for these problems is the absolute conic which appears as a natural calibration object always present in space. To observe it, however, self-calibration constraints are needed. In this paper a method to represent the rather abstract concept of the absolute conic through rea...

Monocentric City Redux

This paper argues that centralized employment remains an empirically relevant stylization of midsize U.S. metros. It extends the monocentric model to explicitly include leisure as a source of utility but constrains workers to supply fixed labor hours. Doing so sharpens the marginal disutility from longer commutes. The numerical implementation calibrates traffic congestion to tightly match obser...

Across language families: Genome diversity mirrors linguistic variation within Europe

OBJECTIVES The notion that patterns of linguistic and biological variation may cast light on each other and on population histories dates back to Darwin's times; yet, turning this intuition into a proper research program has met with serious methodological difficulties, especially affecting language comparisons. This article takes advantage of two new tools of comparative linguistics: a refined...
